Erratic
2026
Erratic is an audiovisual animation examining geomagnetic forces as an invisible environmental condition of technological systems. It draws on solar eruptions, geomagnetic storms, and the KP index—phenomena that are not exceptional events but fundamental prerequisites of modern infrastructure. Navigation, satellites, power grids, and time reference systems operate under the implicit assumption of a stable geomagnetic field. Only when this stability destabilizes do their dependencies become visible.
The sculpture represents Earth: a seemingly closed, massive body whose geometry is distorted by real geomagnetic data. Technology does not appear as a protective structure but manifests through error, fracture, and inconsistency within the object’s body. The sun itself remains unseen; only its effects are perceptible. Humans are present solely as observers.
Erratic frames geomagnetic systems as a black box: foundational, effective, uncontrollable—and only perceived through failure.
